What's a good hash rate for solo mining? I get that it’s pretty much a lottery, but I'm curious what everyone thinks is the minimum hash rate that could give a decent chance of mining a block.
Honestly, it varies a lot based on your budget. Generally, the higher your hash rate, the better your chances of hitting a block daily, monthly, or yearly. You can even run some numbers on this site for estimating your odds.
I checked that site, but it seems off. I’ve seen people hit blocks with just 50-100 TH/s. Like, theoretically, someone with 5 TH/s could score a block too. I’m just looking for a realistic hash rate for a decent shot at mining something once a year.
You gotta realize that for every 100,000 solo miners, some might wait forever without finding a block. It all comes down to perspective. Your expectation really depends on what you consider realistic.
I saw someone mine a block with just 3.3 TH/s recently. But that doesn’t mean others will strike lucky at that rate. That site’s pretty accurate with probability, but luck isn’t something you can measure.
If you’re gonna go solo mining, think of it like heating your house during winter. Hitting a block is just a bonus. I’m using two Avalon Mini 3 miners, making just enough to cover the power costs, but they keep my room warm.
In simple terms, your hash rate should match what you're willing to lose on electricity. The formula’s easy: how much you’re okay with losing, the power cost, and your miner's efficiency. You probably won’t be mining profitably, though.
Thanks for all the info, guys. This has been super helpful. I think I’ll stick to the heating lottery for now. If I hit a block, maybe I’ll think about investing in a big rig.
Anything above zero? I bought a Bitaxe Gamma 601 for $110. It hashes at 1 TH/s and uses about 17 watts. Not likely to find a block, but there’s a tiny chance.
With that cash, you could buy a lottery ticket daily instead of just once a month. Sure, the lottery might have better odds for a win, but mining can be cheaper in the long run.
