Saw a tweet saying the US has over $6 billion in bitcoin. They got it from three busts: Silk Road, Bitfinex hackers, and James Zhong. Right now, they’re sitting on a bunch of coins but planning to sell in batches this year.

They really picked the worst time to sell, lol. Back in late 2008, they auctioned stuff while the bank crisis was hitting. That’s what happens when you stick to a schedule.
Had no idea they still had so many coins left. Thought a good chunk was already sold... Anyone got a complete list of the BTC seizures by the government over the years?

That tweet could be misleading. US claims they have it, but how accurate is that info? I heard different numbers for Silk Road, seems fishy.
Yeah, but let’s be real. They may not care about the market, but they’ll definitely care about the cash they make from selling.
Found some recent data showing the US had over 200k BTC valued at about $5.6 billion. Crazy how that's roughly 1% of all bitcoins out there.

I doubt they’re HODLers. They sell based on legal rulings. If court says sell, they’ll do it without worrying about market timing.
Right, but they could wait. If they sell now, they won’t get the best price. Holding off for a year or two could mean way more cash.

People are too scared of this US dump. Honestly, 40k or 50k BTC isn't that huge in the grand scheme of things.
I don’t get the strategy either. Seems silly to sell now and then maybe have to buy it back when they realize its value.

Governments love creating fear. Selling in batches could be a tactic. See how it affects Bitcoin's price, then adjust accordingly.

True, they won’t just dump them unless they legally have to. They’ll likely calculate the best time to unload.

I believe it’ll just be a bump. Those of us in for the long haul shouldn’t worry too much. Someday, governments might even want to buy bitcoins back.

Different government officials have their views on crypto. A change in admin could shift their approach entirely. It’s all over the place.
Selling seized coins seems kinda wrong. What are they gonna use the cash for? Fund campaigns or pay off debts?
Not really shady, though. Cash from seized assets often goes into public funds. They might not care much about the price they get.

Most likely, they’ll target James Zhong’s stash in batches. Sounds like they sold some in March, more to come this year.
All the cash from seized assets goes to government budgets. It’s not unethical, it’s the policy.
Exactly! But they might be creating FUD as they sell. A slow rollout could help avoid market panic.
But what about victims? They should get their cash back from hacks, not just fill government pockets. This could take ages.
