Mempool.space is open source, so if you wanted, you could host it yourself. But if not, just cross-check fees from various sources to get a median.

With privacy in mind, is it worth paying extra for fees that are high? Maybe donate that money instead to something beneficial.

Johoe’s mempool stats are great. Shows how fees have fluctuated over the last day. I mean, if you had tried to send a 6 sat/vB transaction yesterday, you’d be waiting for ages. You can’t really predict those spikes.

I doubt Phoenix has issues with smaller transactions, as long as you cover the initial 1000 sat fee for the first channel. It’s been a minute since I last used it, but I think your channel can grow larger than that…

For that little amount, I’d suggest a custodial LN wallet. It’s easier to use low-fee altcoins through instant exchanges. Honestly, trusting a third party with small amounts isn't a big deal. It's a pain to deal with…

Could be why it’s struggling to mine blocks. If it doesn’t recognize the easy difficulty, then it might not find anything. Assuming difficulty=1 doesn’t mean instant blocks.
