If someone misplaces their ledger, like after an accident, how can they recover their assets?

Just like any software wallet, use the seed phrase. You can grab a new ledger or any wallet that supports it. But honestly, wouldn’t recommend just any wallet if you’re using hardware for security.

Yeah, you can recover if you got your seed phrase saved. Just find a BIP39 wallet for recovery. Could be Electrum, Sparrow, or any hardware wallet. Or set up cold storage with an airgapped device. Just saying online wallets aren’t super secure.

Just to clarify, Electrum and Sparrow are software, not wallets. You can install Electrum on an airgapped computer and sign transactions there. Also, connecting your hardware wallet to Electrum is a solid move, especially for newbies.

Honestly, first thing I'd do is move my funds if the wallet gets found. Use an offline computer with Sparrow for a new seed. Then create a watch-only wallet online and restore the ledger's seed with Electrum or Sparrow. Send all funds to that watch-only wallet. Repeat for altcoins.

I like those steps but just a heads up, you’re sending to an offline wallet, not a watch-only one. The watch-only just shows addresses, no transfers can happen from it. Better stick to an offline wallet.

I thought I was clear enough. When I post with my alt, I’m on my phone and it’s a pain to type. No reason to keep the seed on two devices. Off-line machine is just a temporary cold wallet until you switch it to a hardware one.

Honestly, great advice for OP to follow. But step 3 could use more detail about the cold-storage option. Restoring the seed phrase to an online wallet isn’t the best idea, even if it gets encrypted later.

Best way to avoid this mess? Don’t take your hardware wallet everywhere! Keep it safe at home. And adding an extra passphrase to your seed words makes it harder for anyone to brute force access.

I get your point but your wording is kinda confusing. You’ve got one wallet from your seed phrase. The offline wallet has private keys. The online one is just for viewing. It’s misleading to say you’re sending to a watch-only wallet.

Lol, semantics are fun, right? But seriously, we should have these chats more.

Remember, there are no crypto coins on the ledger, just private keys for UTXOs on the blockchain. Use your mnemonic recovery words to access everything stored on that lost ledger.

Honestly, your seed should be on paper somewhere safe. That’s your backup. If you lose the ledger, move your coins to a new address with new seed words. I don’t fully trust closed source devices.

First thing, don’t keep your seed phrase in one place. Hardware wallets are safer than hot wallets, but you still need backups like paper wallets. Access requires either your seed or private key. Losing your seed means losing your coins.

Either the seed phrase or generated passwords must not be stored in just one place. Best to store keys in at least 3 different spots. Things happen, and you want access when you need it.

He didn’t say if the only copy of the seed was with the Ledger, did he? These tips are solid but without knowing what’s up, they can be useless. What if he realizes after the accident that his saved seed phrases were wrong?

You gotta use the recovery phrase you got when setting up the device. Do you even have access to that recovery phrase or is it lost too?

Don’t take your hardware wallet to places where you don’t plan to spend crypto.

Hardware wallets should stay home, in safe spots. They’re meant for storing most of your crypto. For daily stuff, hot wallets are fine, but be ready to lose funds if your phone goes missing.
