So, are HD wallets and descriptor wallets basically the same thing? I can’t wrap my head around it, and I need a bit of clarity. I found some stuff online that sounds smart, but it's a bit over my head. Can anyone break it down simply? Thanks!

Nah man, they’re not the same at all. HD wallets are like the go-to now, using a single seed to derive multiple keys. Descriptor wallets are a different angle, relying on scripts for wallet generation. They both handle Bitcoin better than the old-school wallets, though.

To sum it up, HD wallets let you manage multiple accounts under one seed, while descriptor wallets focus more on security by not letting you export individual keys. Makes sense, right?

Wait a sec, that’s kinda misleading. Descriptors aren’t just about security. If Bitcoin Core had skipped the descriptor thing and went straight to BIP 44 paths, I’d still argue that exporting private keys should be banned. The real security issue comes from BIP 32’s unhardened derivation, and that’s been around way before descriptors.
