Why even bother with brain wallets in 2024? Frankly, I don’t see the point. There’s hardly any real educational value. Unless you’re looking to see how fast brainflayers can grab coins from a specific text. It's wild how many resources people invest in that.
I made it because someone asked, and it was easy to whip up. About the educational side, yeah, it’s debatable, but I felt I had to help the user out. And hey, I made sure to warn everyone not to put real money in a brain wallet.
I’m the one who requested this tool. I was curious about how to code it in Bash for Linux, and I think it turned out great! But yeah, the risks are real. Just leaving the command in the history is a big vulnerability. Still, it’s a fun teaching tool.
I’m not sure that’s a valid point. A lot of folks use things they probably shouldn’t. If that’s the argument, then no one should be using Bitcoin since most stick to Visa or Mastercard. We should push for more Linux users.
But the reality is, Windows is still the go-to for most folks, and hardware usually favors it too. Even a programmer on Linux often has to test on Windows. Plus, I can’t use WSL since I’m on Windows 7. Isn’t there a simpler way to run a bash script?
I wouldn’t bother with this if warpwallet exists. But for those on Linux, it’s neat and convenient. If anyone asks, I’d point them to warpwallet instead.
Yeah, it’s definitely a bit much for non-Linux users. VirtualBox could work, but it takes up space, and I don’t want to sacrifice RAM just for a bash script.
I tried VirtualBox before; it was cool but too heavy on RAM for my liking. I mean, we’re talking about a simple script here. People shouldn’t need to reserve so much memory just to run it.
What you said about Linux makes sense. Most devs work in Linux unless they’re specifically targeting Windows. He’s not selling this, just made it for fun, so I get why he went with Linux.
Stop whining, man. Larry probably just doesn’t wanna switch from Windows. WSL is a thing, but it takes up RAM since it runs a Linux environment alongside Windows. Can’t get everything for free.
No issues with developing in any OS. I try to promote an alternative mindset, like choosing Linux over Windows and open-source over closed-source. It’s all part of the learning journey.
