This article hits the nail on the head... Coinbase users are totally getting scammed with tax reporting.

Can't you just download your transaction history and figure it out yourself? Keeping track of what you put in and took out helps a ton. Plus, using only one or two exchanges makes it way easier for calculating losses.

It's not just Coinbase, though. They’re just the biggest player. Gemini and Kraken have the same tax reporting issues with the Form 1099-K. I’ve done a ton of tax returns, and handling crypto transactions is such a hassle. Stock brokers send a 1099-B, which is way simpler.

Not sure if that's the main issue for Coinbase's tax mess. If the problem is with inflows, why not build software that ignores all but the initial transactions? Users just need to enter what they paid for their crypto. Quick fix, right?

I feel like depending on a third party for your taxes shows a lack of responsibility. If something goes wrong, the tax authorities aren’t gonna let you off easy by blaming them. I’m not saying Coinbase's stuff is inaccurate, but manual errors are definitely a risk.

Seriously, why are crypto traders pointing fingers at Coinbase? Exchanges don't have to handle tax calculations. Brokers in stocks or Forex don’t do that either. It’s kinda unreasonable to expect them to take on that burden.

Aren't you just reporting overall gains? Here, we add up assets yearly instead of stressing over every trade. You just need to figure out the fiat value when you sell. A monthly average usually works, just remember the big ones.

In the U.S., brokers must issue 1099-B forms for the IRS. But crypto exchanges don’t have that requirement yet… though the IRS is pushing for at least 1099-K forms to show that you own crypto.

The idea of a software solution is solid. If inflows are the issue, why not let users just input their purchase prices? Simple solution that saves everyone time.

I opened a Coinbase account but never really used it. Do they only send those tax forms if you hit a certain transaction threshold?
