- How does the government actually seize Bitcoin?Sep 20, 2025
Good point! And yeah, it’s risky cashing out with platforms connected to your identity. Gotta be careful, especially after the BTC-e shutdown.

If you read what they wrote, they explain a lot of this. Basically, it all leads back to someone from Silk Road who sent stolen BTC to an exchange. Dumb move.
It’s not that they don’t care about privacy, it’s just that money shouldn’t be private under AML laws. They can’t let criminals operate freely.
That’s what worries me about privacy coins. They need to find a balance between being useful and not attracting too much attention.
Totally agree. Layer 2 networks will be a tough nut to crack too. Maybe if they control enough nodes they’ll find some patterns, but it’s a tall order.
- Tax Consequences of Crypto-to-Crypto TradesMar 19, 2025
Yeah, gains are unrealized as long as you haven’t sold. Real estate can do like-kind exchanges without taxes, but crypto is different. Crypto trades are taxable unless they qualify for like-kind, and that’s not the case…
- Tax Consequences of Crypto-to-Crypto TradesMar 19, 2025
But it’s not pure unrealized profit, right? Like if you start with 10k and pour 15k into altcoins, have you not realized some profit? If only altcoin trades were tax-free like some other exchanges but nope, tax law says…
- Tax Consequences of Crypto-to-Crypto TradesMar 16, 2025
BTC has a USD value attached, so it’s not a zero-sum thing. When you buy altcoins with BTC, the IRS sees it as two separate transactions: 1. You sell BTC for its USD worth. 2. You use that USD to buy the altcoins. You…
Haha I love these discussions... So Yellen’s anti-Bitcoin, but that doesn’t really mean much alone. Now, Hester Peirce at SEC? That’s good for crypto!
Ciphertrace isn't enforcing anything; they're just creating tools. If governments sign off on the travel rule, exchanges will have to adapt and verify KYC for all withdrawals. It could streamline things.
Yeah, Coinbase and Gemini just hiked their fees. Kraken noted subpoenas have doubled in just a year. It's a burden for them, and this trend probably isn't going anywhere.
- Do we really need regulation for cryptocurrency?Feb 27, 2023
Sure, but without regulation, consumers can get ripped off. There are bad actors out there.
- FSB and the Future of StablecoinsDec 28, 2022
You really think so? The FSB report actually mentions Tether, USDC, and others. Those are key for Bitcoin’s liquidity. A ban or any pressure on major players could seriously shake up the crypto market. If Libra hadn’t…
Not exactly a judgment, though. They didn’t go to trial. Just a long settlement after years of legal back and forth. Too bad, could’ve set a better precedent.
- Craig Wright's Claims and the Bitcoin CommunityMay 27, 2020
Shutting him down? By what, hiring someone to take him out? Nah, just ignore the fool.
- Craig Wright's Claims and the Bitcoin CommunityMay 25, 2020
The copyright office has gotten so many complaints that they had to release a statement. They don’t recognize Wright as Satoshi and won't investigate claims like this. They just handle the paperwork. Whatever he thinks…
- Is Crypto Facing a Regulatory Siege?Apr 28, 2020
What does being ‘crypto-friendly’ even mean? The U.S. and Japan have heavy regulations and licensing that restrict trading freedom. Japan even kicked privacy coins off exchanges.
Not every exchange reports all trades. They’re supposed to report unusual or random trades, so if you’re on a compliant exchange, they might be one of the ones reporting. OP, are you sure your numbers are accurate? If…
But did you cash out to USD through Coinbase? That seems to be a common link for people getting those IRS letters.
Yeah the IRS hasn’t really clarified much on crypto and like-kind exchanges. For 2017 and earlier, it’s still kinda hazy. A lot of tax pros are playing it safe and saying different cryptos aren’t "like-kind." Maybe the…
