I heard Coinbase sent out 1099-K forms for 2018 in early 2019 to those who had over 20k in gross proceeds and more than 200 transactions. But did they do it for 2017 too? I mean, a lot of folks made gains that year. When did they actually start sending W-9 or 1099-K forms? I found some old stuff from 2016.

Yeah, the article about 2018 you mentioned has info saying 1099-Ks were also sent for 2017. But it’s not about gains from 2018. That news came out in Feb 2018. I looked around, and honestly, Google mostly shows that news link. If you’re worried about filing your taxes for 2017, check your email. That’s where they send the 1099-K. If you haven’t seen it, you can download it from their site.

I feel like my question is kinda irrelevant now since the IRS is probably tracking crypto owners anyway. Just saying, it seems like they know everything.

True, but you still gotta file it. Check out the draft for 2020 that I found. Might wanna prepare yourself with the info you need since the IRS is gonna make it official at some point.
