Hey folks,
I’m trying to set up a mining rig using stranded gas. It’ll be in a shipping container on a gas well in Alberta. I know more about the oil side than tech stuff, so I’m kinda lost. Any tips or advice would be great!
Setting Up a Remote Mining Operation

Shoot me a direct message. Happy to help.
I’ve got a few small mining setups myself. My network is pretty straightforward. In each place, I've got:
1 broadband internet connection with a router,
a basic Windows PC running RealVNC and BTCTool,
1 Ethernet switch with 48 ports.
So the miners and my PC connect through the switch, which links up to the router. For remote tasks, I just use remote desktop to access the PC at the site.

Interesting you went with Windows for remote access. I’m running a Debian-based OS at my sites to avoid those sudden Windows restarts and updates. Just feel like Debian is more stable for this kind of work.

I’m curious, why take on something this big solo, especially in such a remote area? What happens if you have issues? Sounds like it’d be stressful without someone on-site. We usually have teams watch things 24/7. Seems risky.
I’d love a tutorial on setting this all up. How do you handle power outages without being there? Do you have a generator? I assume it’s not easy getting internet if you’re in a totally remote place?
Honestly, it’s a super basic setup. There are fancier ways to do it, but I just use a PC with remote access like VNC. It’s all pretty simple. Just remote into the PC to control things.
Wow, even a basic setup sounds expensive. What’s your total investment? Also, are setups like Starlink worth it? How’s your profit been every month? Have you recouped your initial costs?
Nah, it’s not as pricey as you think. For that networking setup I spent about $100 on a cheap PC and around $50 for an old switch. So, $150 for basic networking. You need a PC to manage the miners anyway.
Yeah, I’ve got power costs at six cents. That’s pretty good! At that rate, you should be making some profit.
Just keep your miners off the WAN. It's risky and if you're new to this, it's even worse. Stick to the basic setup mentioned above with a secure OS and trusted remote access app. I’d add a monitoring tool like AwesomeMiner to manage everything without needing to jump in all the time.
