Hey everyone, I’ve started my Thesis on whether mining Bitcoin is even profitable in my country. I figured it'd be interesting to explore. I grabbed an Antminer S5 to kick things off, but my wife couldn’t handle the noise. After three days, I had to shut it down. Now, I’m stuck without data for my research... anyone have any recent mining data?

Why not use mining difficulty calculators? They can generate data without you having to mine for real.

But wouldn’t that overlook the randomness of actually finding a block in a pool?

True, mining calculators are based on stats, so they don't guarantee earnings. Just saying, someone using my pool since the start would have done better than expected, about 25% more. Check out Kano's pool; it's showing over 106% lifetime earnings.

I was thinking about that too, but I really need some real data to make my point stronger.

You need to share which country you’re in. If nobody here is from your region, the results could be off due to local costs like electricity.

I’m in Ireland. Not sure if anyone else here is from Ireland. Does it really matter for data when I could adjust for my local rates later?

Sounds like you've learned a lot about mining’s practical issues, like noise and power use. But in Ireland, the S5 might not even cover your electricity costs. Good luck with your Thesis! Maybe pivot to studying the halving effects on mining instead?

Hey, I’ve got a 15 TH/s farm and I can lend you my Antminer S5. I can provide weekly reports and mine on any pool you prefer. I’m in southern USA, so let’s see if that works.

What about using data from mining pools? Or just look at the blockchain? Different pools yield different results unless you're doing a PPS model. Just pick a pool and stick with their data.

Good point! But keep in mind that past six months data won't be the same in the next six months. You need to decide if those past stats will work for you or if you need personal mining data. It really depends on your Thesis angle.

If you just want raw data, check out kano.is. They have a lot of public stats including luck stats. I ran a thread for a year documenting my mining on p2pool, so I have a ton of data to share.

Don’t forget about heat management too. But in Ireland, you might be fine on that front.

I feel like you’ve probably done your Thesis already. I’d love to read it if you’re okay sharing. I’m sure others would be interested too!

You can just use a mining calculator and get the data easily. Hope there's a good one out there, like CoinWarz, for checking mining power and electricity costs. It'll show profits and losses too.
