Haven't touched my MultiBit wallet in ages. Now that I’m trying to get my Bitcoin, I’m stuck. Got my 18-word recovery phrase and password on MultiBit.info but it syncs up to 87% and freezes for days. Is there any way to get my Bitcoin back?
Looks like you might have blown it. By typing your recovery phrase into that site, you probably compromised your wallet. Real wallet software wouldn't ask for your seed on some random site. If there are coins there, they might already be gone.
For sure, they shut down a while back. That’s why folks are telling you to try other wallets to recover your coins. Anything claiming to be a MultiBit wallet now is just trying to scam you. Check your Bitcoin balance on Electrum ASAP, because you could be in danger.
Exactly. The site is super new and they got private info everywhere. But the red flag is that they want you to enter your recovery phrase to download the wallet. That’s just wrong.
Never ever type your recovery phrase on any website! If you do, say goodbye to your funds. You should only download wallets directly from official sites. MultiBit has been defunct since 2017. Follow these steps to restore it in Electrum quickly. But honestly, if it was a scam, kiss your coins goodbye.
Thanks for explaining this. Looks like I fell for a phishing scheme. Those wallets weren’t even meant for me! Someone sent me their recovery phrases and website to recover their Bitcoin. Good thing I tested it on a clean machine, so no harm done.
So now your whole computer could be compromised... I’m not a security expert, but you probably need to take action like factory resetting your system or even reinstalling the OS. If that seed phrase wasn’t yours, it means someone is after your sensitive info, especially related to crypto.
First you said it's your old MultiBit wallet, now it's someone else's? You just handed out their secret words and might’ve compromised both their wallet and your laptop, which can be fixed, but their wallet? Probably gone now. You really didn’t do any research before entering your recovery phrase online?
Odd, I tried searching for MultiBit and didn’t see that phishing site in results. The real website is multibit.org, which redirects to their GitHub saying "MultiBit is Deprecated Do Not Use". Clearly, the site you mentioned is a scam since they ask for the seed phrase before downloading anything.
