Is a USB-C Powered Miner Feasible?

Hey everyone. Quick question about something I'm thinking of.

If I build a USB-C powered miner, would anyone actually buy it? I'm picturing a compact device, maybe 8cm cubed, drawing 12V/5A from a USB-C PD port, so no bulky power brick needed.

I have over 30 motherboards, some with USB-C. Just need to check which ones support real USB-C.

I can look through my mobos and see which ones have the proper USB-C too. I’ve got a B450 for Ryzen and a B470 for Intel.

Not sure that mobo will work either. The manual doesn’t mention USB power capabilities, just data rates. The RGB nonsense in the manual is just ridiculous.

I’ve got a bunch of Ryzen boards too. Four with 3900 CPUs, pretty decent prices. They can support 3700, 3800, and 3900.

Yeah, I looked at that one too. But no way it’ll work if it can’t handle power.

I have two Gen2 USB-C ports on my Z370-i, but no PD support mentioned in the manual. Just faster speeds.

Just got an ASUS TUF X570 Gaming board with various connections. No clue what that means for power though.

High power over USB-C seems optional. You need a special hub for higher voltage. I get why most boards skip PD less risk of failures.

I spent ages looking and even expensive motherboards don’t have it. Found some that use AI charging but limited to 18 watts.

Decent hubs are rare too. Most just split into USB-A, HDMI, etc. I remember when USB-C was new, so many wanted miners using it. Still no good options.

Yeah, if it could deliver 40 watts consistently, that’d be awesome.

Found some chargers on Amazon but nothing that does data and PD. USB-C PD is supposed to work with HDDs, printers, etc. Weird.

What would it take to make a USB-C hub with data and PD? Maybe a hub with a PD controller for each port? Sounds complex.

From what I've seen, most USB-C ports only do data transfer. A few might do video too, but options are limited.

Honestly, video isn’t needed for this. Just data and power. What’s this about being capped by the power source?

The power source is the hub. Devices connected to it draw power. Would be cool to have a PD hub that also handles data. Should exist!

Klintay had a solid 16-port hub with a built-in power supply. Wonder if a mixed port hub would work, like 4 USB-A and 4 USB-C.

There was chatter about this on another board. People worry about cheap cables and the risk of fire with high power next to data lines.
