Perpetuals and futures are not the same. Exchanges often call everything futures, which can be super confusing.

Yeah I get that. I honestly never bothered to look into it. Just thought they were the same thing. I see perpetuals stay closer to asset prices, which is why I lean towards them.

I wouldn’t stress too much about it. Both are about predicting prices but the timing is different, like short-term trading vs long-term investing.

Totally agree. I noticed this more in the recent bull run. Perpetuals were dropping but futures didn’t fall as much. If I want to hold, futures seem better.

The key difference is that you can hold perpetuals indefinitely, unlike futures which expire. I pick perpetuals because I can cut losses if things go wrong.

Right? The way exchanges mix it all up is wild. I prefer perpetuals too. No expiry is a big plus for me, especially with low use.

First time hearing they’re different. I thought futures and perpetuals were basically the same. I mostly trade spot, feels simpler.

Perpetual implies you can hold for the long run, while futures are more like traditional trades with set points. I lean toward futures but it’s all messy with how exchanges label them.

Many traders don’t realize they’re different. Exchanges use both terms interchangeably, which doesn’t help anyone.

#10 Jun 10, 2017, 04:39 AM Honestly, I think perpetuals and futures are the same in the end. If you mess up, you lose, if you’re right, you win. Just different setups.

#11 Jun 10, 2017, 06:18 AM I’m not a seasoned trader yet. I thought they were two types of trades: futures and spot. The whole perpetual thing is new to me.

#12 Jun 10, 2017, 12:07 PM I know futures well but perpetuals are a mystery. Can anyone explain the key differences? I usually trade futures.

#13 Jun 10, 2017, 02:52 PM My knowledge is mostly in spot trading. I’m still learning about derivatives like perpetuals. Sticking to Bitcoin for now.

#14 Jun 10, 2017, 08:15 PM Most people just lump everything into futures. Perpetuals don’t have an expiry date, which is a big deal. Traditional futures do.

#15 Jun 12, 2017, 09:02 PM I prefer perpetuals for their simplicity. Futures can be complicated with expiration dates and rollovers.

#16 Jun 13, 2017, 07:14 AM I’m not clear on the differences either. I think they’re just labeled differently by exchanges.

#17 Jun 13, 2017, 12:22 PM 20x use? Man, that’s risky. I lost a lot trading that way, now I stick to lower use like 5x.

#18 Jun 13, 2017, 02:24 PM I thought both were about predicting price movements. Guess I was wrong about that.

#19 Jun 13, 2017, 07:39 PM A few reasons to pick perpetuals: not all assets have futures, not every platform lists them, and perpetuals usually have deeper order books.

#20 Jun 13, 2017, 08:07 PM Good points. Fast execution is key, but it also depends on the exchange. Some only have popular pairs listed.
