Understanding Shares in Mining Pools

Hey, can someone explain what shares really mean in mining? I’ve heard they’re not much when you're solo mining but is there more to it? What’s a best share anyway? Here’s my mining rig info if it helps. My best share number is 43859517958.53396… what’s the deal with that? Thanks!

Actually, I think they might have a point. CK and Kano wrote a lot of pool software, so it could be useful to ask them directly. But hey, for what it’s worth, your best share means the highest difficulty share you’ve submitted. So in your case, it’s 43,859,517,958.53396, which is around 44G. Just so you know, even solo mining has relevance for shares.
