Understanding Rendezvous Routing in Lightning Network

I’ve been trying to figure out Rendezvous Routing and its connection to the Lightning Network. Most searches lead to the Rendezvous Protocol, not routing, and I wonder if there's a link. Seems like the protocol relates more to P2P networks than routing itself... Anyone else think so?
