Staying Safe with Alternative Blockchains

I haven't seen anyone talk about the biggest worry I have with trying out alternative blockchains. I know some might think I’m just spreading FUD against anything not Bitcoin. But seriously, let’s not forget basic computer security while getting hyped about being early adopters.

Totally agree with you. And yeah, using different passwords applies not just to exchanges but also to forums, emails, and pools too. Plus, some antivirus programs really don't like mining software unless it’s whitelisted.

For sure. Don’t trust everything those big names in Bitcoin say about alt chains. Some folks think 1 confirmation is better than 3 faster ones. But if you read Satoshi’s paper, it’s clear that more confirmations equal more security.

Good point! Using an altcoin client could easily lead to a hidden virus targeting Bitcoin wallets. If you own a lot of BTC, I wouldn’t risk running other clients on the same machine... maybe I’m just paranoid?

Yeah, if you’ve got a bunch of BTC on a PC, being super careful with third-party software is a must. Whether it’s an alt client or even some random game, better safe than sorry.

Sucks for people with only one computer. Thankfully, I've got a few so I can safely use my alt miners.

You can actually have several wallet files. Just need one portable Bitcoin client on an encrypted drive for safety, and a regular one for daily transactions. You don't usually send out 5000+ BTC, right?

I think there's no reason why multiple chains with different features can't exist together. You could have a super reliable chain with only the best features, plus a fast, experimental chain, and even specialized ones like Namecoin.

People with one computer can still keep wallets and apps separate using user accounts. Like on Linux, run different coins under separate accounts and lock down their directories.

Honestly, Artforz didn't destroy anyone's credibility as much as some others in this space. His bad PR is nothing compared to the drama others create.

LOL it’s open source, there’s no real hierarchy here. No one can really control anyone else.

The Namecoin situation isn’t done and it’s definitely impacted BitcoinExpress. I dug into the blockchain rewrite and it’s something that can be achieved while still mining BTC. It’s a big deal.
