I think there's no reason why multiple chains with different features can't exist together. You could have a super reliable chain with only the best features, plus a fast, experimental chain, and even specialized ones…

You can actually have several wallet files. Just need one portable Bitcoin client on an encrypted drive for safety, and a regular one for daily transactions. You don't usually send out 5000+ BTC, right?
