Is mining even worth it these days?

Can you only mine with super expensive rigs? I’ve just got a laptop, so am I totally out of luck? Is there any other option?

Yeah, you’re going up against other miners for those blocks. More powerful setups get more hashrate and snag most of the blocks. You can't really mine Bitcoin with just a laptop anymore. You’ll need an ASIC mining rig or join a pool to get a share of the rewards.

True, those pricey machines will pay off over years of mining. Better off looking into renting equipment and making money that way. Mining with CPUs or GPUs is pretty much dead now unless you wanna wait 4-5 years for any returns. Some new coins pop up, but I’ve barely mined anything valuable or sold too soon. If you're serious about mining, definitely check out ASICs.

You might be kinda late to the mining game. Bitcoin mining has evolved from CPUs to GPUs, and now ASICs dominate. Mining with a standard computer or laptop is just not feasible anymore.

What kind of laptop are you using? Using nicehash’s calculator, an RTX-3050 might get you like 0.00000137 BTC or around $0.15/day. But watch out for electricity and maintenance costs. Plus, mining only gets tougher over time. Better to pool mine than to go solo on Bitcoin, that’s for sure.

Just get a beagle, point it to viabtc.com, and forget about it.

Weirdly, you keep asking the same thing. Today’s mining scene needs lots of ASICs, not just one or two. You’ll need enough to match the big players. Don’t count on hitting a block randomly. If you want to actually make cash, that’s a big investment for ASICs, power supplies, and a place to set everything up. This is industrial scale stuff, not a hobby.

Quick question, is the equipment rental market still alive? Are people still renting hashing power in 2025? I’d love some data on how many are still in this game. Is it profitable at all? Last time I tried Nicehash it was ages ago. Is anyone even making it work nowadays?

Yeah, renting hash power from places like NiceHash is still huge. Just the other day, someone dropped 1EH of rental at ck's solo pool.

A lot of folks are catching on to Bitcoin mining's potential, so competition is intense. Only those with top-notch rigs can mine profitably now. Mining Bitcoin with a GPU or CPU? You’re just wasting time and energy unless you’re in it for some low-value altcoin early on. If rig building was competitive, miners’ prices would differ. Check Whattomine for profitability calculations.

Mining calculators for PCs and GPUs aren't really relevant anymore since paybacks are so high. They also can’t calculate rentals for rigs with powerful GPUs. Most new ASICs aren't suitable for home setups due to their crazy energy needs.

You can technically mine on a laptop now and get some Bitcoin, but the returns will be tiny. There are links to services here where you can earn crypto rewards.

Like I said, you’ll earn tiny rewards in BTC, but you'll likely just be mining some low-value altcoin and converting it to BTC. Since 2014, mining Bitcoin without an ASIC miner has been pretty much impossible. If you're cool with that, keep asking in the altcoin channels.
