I've been diving into quantum computing lately and I'm kinda worried. If Bitcoin decides to switch to a quantum-resistant signature method, wouldn’t that make all the current ASIC miners obsolete? They’re all built for the existing cryptography, right?
So, would we need to redesign all that hardware? And how would companies like Bitmain deal with it? What’s the timeline for something like this?

Public keys from Satoshi's wallets are out there for anyone. Imagine if someone figures out the private keys using a quantum computer. Those wallets could change hands easily, but honestly, I think we’ve got a long way to go before that happens.

ASICs just do SHA-256 on the block header, so they don’t care what kind of signature system Bitcoin uses.
Not true. If ECDSA gets wrecked but SHA-256 stays strong, miners won’t see any changes. If both get broken, we’d have to rehash everything, but right now, SHA-256 is solid. No one’s found a way to quantum-hack hash functions yet, and even MD5 is still safe against quantum attacks.
Pretty much need new math to be created here. But hey, it’s possible, right?

I wouldn’t say that. Only those with quantum computers can access those original keys.

Just a heads up, QC's that can do meaningful stuff aren't even around yet. It’s probably gonna be like 30 years before they’re available to the everyday person.
If a quantum computer can pull a private key from a public key, there’s gonna be some cost involved. I bet it won’t be worth it to hack wallets with low balances.
Once Satoshi’s wallets start getting hacked, we’ll all know it’s time to worry.

The numbers are mind-blowing. 21 million BTC to 1 sat is like 2.1 trillion to 1, which is tiny compared to SHA-256’s massive combinations.
So is it really worth trying to hack a 50-coin address when the math behind SHA-256 is so much bigger?
