Trying to figure out how much cooling I need for my mining farm. Just some things to consider.
- The farm stays sealed, no exhaust fans.
- No water or immersion cooling.
- Power is super cheap.
I know there are better ways to chill things out but I've got no options here. So, let’s do some math.

What’s the size of the room?
It’s an interesting challenge since it’s sealed and no true hot/cold aisle separation.
What’s the power draw on your AC units? You could downclock the miners if it gets too hot.
Room is approximately 32ft by 19ft and about 9.8ft high.
Each 60k BTU AC unit pulls around 6kW, which is about a third of what the miners use. Maybe add some fans to mix air? An AC in the hot side sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Can those ACs send cold air to the hot side?
You could put 10 units on the cold side but pipe a couple to the hot side.
Saw a setup like that where they had tubes for airflow. But your situation is kinda close to what we dealt with before.

Yeah it’s tricky, you really need to monitor temps.
If even one AC isn’t doing its job, you could be in trouble with overheating. It’s like throwing a few heaters in a one-bedroom in the middle of summer.
Ducting wouldn’t be an issue, we could probably aim some AC air to the hot side fairly easily.
How’s your setup affecting temp readings on the miners? Might be important to get those basal temps down.
All my miners are within spec, they’re good.
My cooling setup is somewhat similar but not identical.
Having some airflow is helping me out, but we’re running more BTUs with a smaller room.

You might seriously need more cooling.
Those 60k BTUs are optimistic at best, and don’t forget other gear will give off heat too. If you’ve got multiple ACs, they’ll also generate heat.
I think those M30s can clock down to 3050 watts. Just wonder how much heat from the outside might play into this. Downclock and you might find it works better when combined with those ACs.
The AC’s performance is totally reliant on their rating and climate type.
Got ones that can handle heat up to 52C, but whatever other gear adds heat is minor compared to miners.
That’s exactly what we see hot spots in a poorly ventilated space.
Temperature readings can jump if more miners are turned on or added to the equation.
Totally agree, the cooling relationship isn’t linear at all.
Underclocking your miners helps a lot, maybe even more if you have limited airflow. You’ll have to react to changes in the miner status.

Interesting point. What about getting a programmer to automate the process?
If it tempers the miners based on monitoring, it could be worth it for efficiency.

I’m checking the HVAC ratings, the BTU measure is key in how much heat you can actually move out.
If outside temps rise, the AC efficiency drops but the heat load stays the same.
Whatsminers do have temperature sensors, and it’s feasible to access real-time data.
A little coding could help automate lowering performance based on room temp.
I downclocked my M30s.
Used -10%, running about 93F today.

Your calculations seem on point.
If AC and ambient temps get tweaked, you might be good with your setup.

Efficiency changes based on conditions; pipe length impacts it too.
Heat build-up might make your ACs shut down due to high temps.
Yeah, you can save quite a bit by tweaking the miners.
Going from 3350 watts to around 2700 could help reduce a significant amount of heat. Adding another AC might be a good idea.
Back when we had our farm years ago, I did a similar calculation for cooling needs.
Take into account noise, though. Outdoor units can be real loud.
