Just saw that Iran is allowing some payments in Bitcoin for imports due to sanctions. But what about buying or trading Bitcoin there? Is it actually banned? What options do people have?
Current Legal Status of Bitcoin in Iran

From what I gather, the government seems set on using crypto for itself only. Regular folks might not get a chance to trade it. And honestly, if they do allow it, it could mean they’re up to something shady like funding nuclear projects.

I’ve heard Iranians can buy or sell Bitcoin without much hassle... They even call themselves Bitcoin-friendly. Miners get to mine with cheap electricity, so seems like there’s some support.
If the government is adopting it first, that’s actually a good sign for the citizens. If transactions are legalized, it could pave the way for easier adoption. Other countries might follow suit too.
Not sure what the law says, but I know people are doing business with Bitcoin there. They’re sending Bitcoin abroad for fees and stuff, since USD is hard to get.
Yeah it’s mostly about miners facing issues. Government doesn’t want hobbyists using subsidized electricity for mining since it’s a commercial venture. Totally understandable.
I doubt it’s just the government. I found a quote in a newspaper saying that whether it’s the government or private miners, the coins are mainly for imports. So trading seems off the table.
Honestly, I think the only reason they're showing interest in Bitcoin is to dodge sanctions. Miners can sell to the government, but I don’t see regular people being allowed to trade.
So if people are sending Bitcoin abroad, how do they buy it? Can they get Bitcoin with their local currency?
For sure, check out some P2P platforms. Localbitcoins has traders selling Bitcoin for rials. The rates might be a bit high, but it’s possible.
Thanks for the heads up. Buying and selling in Iran can be tricky with limited sellers.

It’ll get easier for people to trade Bitcoin as long as Iran stays crypto-friendly. P2P trading could thrive until a local exchange pops up to keep things legit.
Iran’s government is definitely looking to sidestep US sanctions with Bitcoin since it’s decentralized. But they won’t be happy if citizens use it freely, that’s for sure.

When will governments stop being greedy and corrupt? They always make rules for their benefit, not for the people. It’s sad they limit access to crypto while still using Bitcoin themselves.
What’s the current legal status of Bitcoin in Iran?
Iran embraces Bitcoin for imports.

I think this could be a good move overall. It might help regulate crypto in Iran and even allow the government to tax it, which could benefit everyone.
