Heads up for anyone with a Bitcoin.dat wallet!
A friend of mine lost a chunk of Bitcoin after messing with his wallet file. He tried to edit it with some random software, claiming it was an accident. Luckily, he shared this info after days of stressing over it. So here's the deal...
Don’t ever try to open a.dat wallet file with an editor!
Yeah, sounds like he opened it in a text editor, which was probably online. That's risky since it can sniff out files opened with it.
I mean, what was he thinking? Why would you even want to view a.dat file that way?
Right?! It just opens up a world of problems. Sure, it doesn't hand over your keys immediately, but it's just not worth the risk. Better to leave it alone.
Seriously, just don't do it.
You can only overwrite your wallet file if you hit "Save" in the editor. Totally wrong approach.
And honestly, why didn’t he make a backup? Seems pretty careless, if you ask me.
Your buddy might still get his Bitcoin back. Tell him to follow a guide but only on a secure, offline device.
There are definitely editors out there that mess with metadata or encoding when you open a file. That alone could ruin it.
