Got a cool new tool here for signing and verifying bitcoin messages. It's lightweight, open-source, and follows BIP137. Perfect for proving you own an address without sharing your private info.

Awesome tool! But what’s the deal with Segwit addresses? I made a draft BIP ages ago that assigns some values for P2WPKH and P2TR messages. Too bad it never got any traction though.

This tool actually handles Taproot headers pretty well. It doesn’t label them as invalid, which is nice. But I’m not too familiar with Taproot, so I guess there’s more to learn here.

Just added Electrum signature support. You can sign and verify messages recognizable by Electrum by using a specific flag. Here’s how it works with some examples... You gotta use the -e flag or it's a no-go.

I’ve been asked to add Taproot support to this tool. However, the link you shared is dead, and I’m really lost on the Taproot algorithm. Like, can you break it down for me?

Crap, my site's down again! I gotta fix that. But about your question on signatures… basically, it’s only clearly defined for Legacy addresses. It’s all based on ECDSA and how the value is stored.

Reading your proposal and still don’t get the terms like BIP0340/challenge or tagged hash. Any chance you can explain those in simple terms? Also, nice Python code for bech32m!

Could you drop a single AppImage file or some kind of standalone executable on GitHub? Would make things a lot easier. This reminds me of that Brainwallet turned CLI, which was dope!

Sorry for the late response and thanks for the feedback! Good news, I’ve reimplemented the CLI in Golang. It’s faster and has fewer bugs. Added some features too!

I can whip up an AppImage for you if you want. Just a heads up, the current master doesn’t compile for Windows.

Why not? Just keep in mind the master branch issue for Windows. I think I fixed that in a dev version though.

Kudos for this topic, it’s really informative! We’re thinking of translating it into other languages to reach more folks who might benefit.

Glad to hear it! We’ve already started working on translations. Romanian is done, and we’re making good progress!

Wait a second, isn’t there a typo or an extra space in the translations? I noticed it while I was going through.

Nice to see Trezor support, but what about Ledger? Also, signing Nostr events would be super cool. Their addresses are similar to bech32.
