Just got a heads up from DHL. The Avalon 851 will be here on Tuesday the 7th. Gonna do a review and a YouTube video for it.

I really hope Canaan did something about the rising power usage in higher temps...
They should address that. I have all the tests from the 841, and once temps hit 80F, power can go up by over 100 watts, all the way to 97F. Did a max temp test at 97F.
That’s not just a Canaan problem. The S9s also burn more power when it gets hot. Plus, Bitmain and Sorcerer PSUs lose efficiency too.
Yeah, my APW3+ did poorly over 85F. Corsair 1500 Titanium was the best among six PSUs tested, but still had heat issues.
So true! In the 100-112F Texas days, my two S9s and one S9i were pulling almost 4700 watts total at 109F. At night it dropped to around 4500. All were APW3++.
Wow, my Whatsminer M3s would use up to 2400 watts each in those temps!
Is this Avalon 851 a 7nm miner or just a quick upgrade from the 841? Haven't seen any official word on it.
From what I know, all Avalons share the same chip, so 851 has the 16nm chips just like the 821 and 841.

What are the specs, anyway? Holding out for a 7nm unless the 851 is under $1k. Seeing the repeat of the 821 all over again...first batch buyers got burned.

Yeah, I’m waiting too. The 821 isn't bad, but not worth it unless 7nm is priced right.
Looks like the 851 is at 14.5 TH with 1350 watts, but probably more like 1550 watts. Other miners are dropping soon too.
Excited to hear more! Can't wait for your review!
If I remember right, this one has an integrated PSU, kinda like Innosilicon.
Edit: Nope, looks just like the 841 and can hit around 14.8 TH but at a higher wattage.
Yeah, those Avalons are super sensitive compared to S9s. Did tests with rising temps and PSUs, they barely affect efficiency.
True, Canaan Sorcerer and Bitmain PSUs show little difference in efficiency. APW3++ fails at high temps, while APW7 handles heat better.

It’s all about the miner and how it interacts with the PSU. Load affects efficiency too. Setups on AC vents did better.
