So, in simple terms, if you got a public key and need to prove it's really yours, a digital signature does that without revealing your private key. It’s a number tied to your private key so you can verify ownership without showing off the secret.
It’s all about asymmetric cryptography, like RSA or ECDSA. You sign with your private key and anyone can verify it with your public key. In Bitcoin, signatures are needed for transactions. Addresses like P2PKH and P2WPKH need those signatures to validate.
Exactly, having a digital signature is like a substitute for your private key. You don’t wanna expose that to anyone on the network.
When you send a transaction, your wallet puts a digital signature on it. That’s what shows you actually own the private key, which makes the transaction legit. Without it? No one’s gonna accept it.
But remember, the way you use digital signatures depends on the transaction type. There are different SIGHASH_FLAGS that determine what has to be validated. Most wallets go for P2PKH with SIGHASH_ALL, making sure nothing changes.

Lamport’s one-time signature is easy to get your head around. It uses cryptographic hashes. True, it’s limited to one document but Merkle’s twist lets you sign multiple documents with one key pair.
Don’t forget, digital signatures are more than just signing messages. Every transaction you create uses one so that the network knows it’s really from you and not someone spoofing you. It’s usually hidden behind password prompts in wallets.
