So, there's this idea about giving every satoshi its own serial number. Basically, it could make a satoshi more than just a currency unit. Think colored bitcoin, securities and stuff.

I mean, sounds cool but has issues. We only have a limited number of satoshis. So, what happens to these penny stocks? They could end up being worth more than the stocks themselves.

This isn't a new concept. Just look up "colored coins" or "smart property".

Not another one talking about "tainted Satoshis". Seriously, what's with these visions?

But if you trade those penny stocks, you're gonna factor in the face value of the colored coin too. Like, buying 1 colored BTC with 0.1 BTC means you'd need to pay 1.1 BTC. If a satoshi stock's worth less than a satoshi, it’s either worthless or we need a hard fork to add more decimals.

You can totally create a melting pool if you want, but that’s on you. My idea stands unless the protocol changes.

Honestly, why would someone melt a colored satoshi? That just means they’re giving it to someone who doesn't get its value.

From what I've read, this could work with order-based coloring. As long as the rules are followed, both will deliver similar results. But paying fees with colored coins? Not sold on needing all this complexity just for that.

Just because a tech has bad uses doesn’t mean it’s a bad tech. There’s lots of practical use for coloring satoshis; benefits can outweigh the cons.

Funny enough, every satoshi is practically numbered. Just hasn’t been calculated yet. I’d probably number them starting from zero instead of by block. Genesis block being 0 to 4999999999, then onwards.

Good call. Base-58 format sounds neat too. Could keep it to 9 characters plus 3 for a checksum.

And, if we mix coins of different colors, the color info won’t get lost. That’s a plus.

But why do you think mixing is a good thing? It could just happen by chance, and if it does, isn't the info lost? Sounds risky.

So, we should add a rule: if a coin gets decolorized, the last holder keeps the value. Maybe issue a new token to them afterwards.

Nice point, but I’m more into low-level coding. I’ll send this idea to the app devs.

My method might give better anonymity. Like, if a secret group used it for trades, they could hide colored satoshis in regular transactions. Yours seems way stricter and easier to spot.

Nope, losing color just means you lost that property. Just like burning your cash by messing with private keys.
