So I've been diving into crypto trading on my own, no fancy classes or anything. I once opened a short position on this meme coin and it shot up like crazy. At first, I thought I was lucky when it dropped and I made a bit over $200. But then I checked my balance and it barely changed. I was ready to cry foul with the exchange...

Dude, that's super risky! Glad you caught it in time.

Right? A lot of us learn the hard way after losing money. It's just part of the game. You probably got caught up in the price swings and forgot to check the funding rates and fees. I do that sometimes too, especially when FOMO kicks in.

Yeah, trading new tokens can be brutal. High funding rates, like -2% every hour sometimes. You stick to solid coins like BTC or ETH, you won't see such crazy rates.

I didn’t even see a question in your post but yeah, that’s what happens when a coin gets shorted hard. Shorters and longers pay or get paid based on who’s in the majority.

Totally! If there are way more shorters, the funding rate can be nasty. You could get liquidated even if the price isn't moving.

Trading really needs a lot more study. You think you know enough, but nah, you’re just scratching the surface. I keep away from those random coins... too risky.

Shitcoins usually have the highest funding fees due to their wild price swings. It’s all about balancing the market, trying to keep things steady.

I thought exchanges were robbing me too. I’d see profits vanish until I figured out funding rates. If you trade without knowing the rules, surprises await.

Yeah, it’s mostly the cheap coins that pump and dump. They exploit arbitrage and funding rates.

MEXC is one exchange I’ve seen people struggling with funding rates. They don’t explain it well at first, but you learn once you’re in the game.

When shorting new coins, always check the funding fees. They can be steep and happen quickly, like every hour.

Funding rates go crazy in new and volatile markets. It’s hard to not think about it when trading BTC because it’s usually stable.

I noticed that too! The funding fees can jump to a few percent during high volume trading, especially with altcoins.

I’ve never seen -4% before. Most exchanges cap it at -3%. What exchange are you using? That sounds like a chance for arbitrage.

For BTC, I don’t think about it much. It’s usually low. But at high use, those small percentages can add up.

Yeah, that’s true. It’s rare to see those extreme fees. But it does happen during wild market shifts.

Funding fees aren’t new. They’ve been around since futures were introduced in crypto. Not the same as stock trading though.

But it’s not an error when rates change. Exchanges adjust them based on market volatility. They have to keep the contracts balanced.

Exactly! The rates can shift often and they have the right to do it anytime.
