Is coinminer.ext in Bitcoin Core a legitimate threat?

So I just downloaded Bitcoin Core from the official site, verified it, but my antivirus flagged some files (coinminer.ext, OSX/Koiot.gen) as malware. Should I proceed with the install or fnd another source? I'm based in the UK.

I think Bitcoin.org is blocked in the UK because of some legal issues. I haven’t used the Mac version myself, but "coinminer" shouldn’t be in there. Try getting it from bitcoincore.org instead.

If you followed the verification steps and got it from a legit source, it’s likely a false positive. Scammers usually slip in mining software, and antivirus software reacts to that.

Yeah, you have to compare the SHA256 hashes with the SHA256SUM. Also, use PGP keys for extra verification. False positives happen a lot with Bitcoin Core binaries, especially with mining-related stuff.

The whole UK ban info is kinda outdated. A while back, they restricted access to the Bitcoin whitepaper, but it seems they’ve opened it up again. Anyway, do antivirus still mark Bitcoin Core as malware?

If you're sure about the official download, it's probably nothing to worry about. Just checking the file's validity is key. What's your antivirus? You can also run it through VirusTotal and post your findings.

As long as you verified signatures, just ignore the noise. False positives are the antivirus companies' issue, not Bitcoin Core's. For tracking results, check bitcoinissafe.com.

So, Wright's case wrapped up in May with the ruling against him. The following reversal in July about Bitcoin.org's judgment is a whole other mess. But still, is it really a malware issue or just people worrying too much?
