People keep saying blockchain is a big deal. It’s said to transform everything from finance to healthcare. But are we really overrating what blockchain can achieve?
Is Blockchain Overhyped?

Not really. Decentralization is just one aspect of blockchain. Many blockchains are centralized too. Like Tether on the Tron network. You can freeze coins there if a court orders it, but not with Bitcoin. That’s a clear sign of decentralization.
Totally agree. Look at blockchain voting. If the fiat system was better, Bitcoin wouldn’t even exist. Satoshi started the chain because of failures in existing systems. And don’t forget, early Bitcoin faced criticism for being slow and not scalable.
Good points. But a lot of blockchain hype comes from folks wanting decentralization. They don’t trust central authorities. Some just implement it because it’s trendy. It can be more expensive where trust is already established.
That’s the oracle problem right there. The real issue isn't the blockchain but how to get reliable real-world data into it. Until we fix that, many apps will still depend on central sources, which is exactly what blockchain aims to avoid.
I’m not fully on board with that. Both centralized and decentralized folks can push blockchain, but it doesn’t guarantee decentralization. It all depends on who’s in control and how the network is structured.

Yeah but people trust central authority out of habit. They might not even know other options exist. Look at Twitter, when centralization goes wrong, it can really disrupt things. Decentralization could be more sustainable in the long run.
If blockchain was such a big deal for supply chains or healthcare, wouldn’t we see it everywhere by now? It’s been over a decade since Bitcoin, but aside from Bitcoin, what’s the real value here?
You know, there’s this non-mined blockchain called git that's older than Bitcoin. It’s interesting how it works, but many people expect every node to keep everything forever. If users only stick with SPV wallets, historical data could vanish.
The saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" really fits here. Many applications don’t need decentralization. Regular databases with an API are often good enough. Plus, some stuff that claims to use blockchain? Probably doesn’t even use it at all.
Totally agree. If blockchain actually cut costs or boosted business revenue, it would be adopted everywhere. But hospitals and other serious industries aren’t using it in their workflows. No clear profit in sight.

True, decentralization costs a lot. People usually ignore those solutions until something goes wrong. They prefer centralization for performance and cost. Just look at how the Internet started decentralized but went the other way.

Not every project needs blockchain or crypto. Just because an idea sounds good doesn’t mean it’s feasible. I remember this altcoin project that wanted to build observatories for kids. Sounds cool, but why a crypto for that?
