Hey everyone,
I’ve got this old paper phrase from like 10 years ago. How do I log in? I downloaded Bitcoin Core, but I'm kinda stuck. Do I need my old public address too? I don’t have that right now, just the paper phrase. Any help would be awesome. I'm totally lost on this... no DMs or links please, I'm not falling for scams.
Old paper phrase? You mean a passphrase, right? Bitcoin Core can’t import seed phrases, so that might not be from Core. Can you check if it’s a 12-word phrase? If so, you could try Electrum or another wallet that can recover your wallet.
Can you show us a sample? Just change the words but keep the format, like the number of words and symbols.
Bitcoin Core doesn’t work with ‘paper phrases’ as far as I know. It’s probably something like a Brainwallet passphrase. But don’t mess with it online unless you’re using an air-gapped machine.
Check this topic on recovering Bitcoin from old storage formats. We need to know what kind of data you have because 'paper phrase' isn’t specific enough for us to help you.
Since you can't import that ‘phrase’ into Bitcoin Core, it's likely not a valid key or the format isn't recognized. HD wallets came out around 2013. If that paper’s from then, it might be an early recovery phrase.
Does it have visible English words or is it just a string of random letters and numbers? Did you have Bitcoin before?
Does it have any specific terms or phrases? That could help us identify the software or method used to create that phrase. Maybe Google has images that resemble it.
If it’s just a set of words, you could tell us how many there are without revealing them directly. If it’s a private key, can you say what it starts with and how long it is? That might help us figure out what’s on your backup.
I’ve never used Armory, but they had a unique backup method with root keys or something. Different versions added complexity, which might make it confusing.
Seems like OP hasn’t been back... maybe they figured it out or just gave up.
Thanks for the help, guys! I downloaded Electrum and tried to access with my seed phrase. But when I entered it, I only got 4 words and the first letter of the 5th word. For example: the quick brown fox j. Then I hit next and got a wallet, but it’s empty!
You probably imported a totally different wallet. How many words did your old phrase have? Usually, it’s 12 to 24 words long. If you’re only sitting on 4 words and a letter, you’re missing too many. I doubt you can recover the wallet with that.
Interesting! Valid seed version numbers for Electrum are 0x01, 0x100, and 0x101. So there’s a slim chance that your input could match a valid seed version.
But seriously, don’t use this method for real wallets!
How many words are in your phrase? If it’s 12, 18, or 24, you might be able to import it into Electrum. But if not, like 17 or something, it’s probably a different access phrase.
