So I just found out Bitcoin core devs got offered around $8.3 million this year... never thought they had sponsors! I always figured they were just early adopters building the network out of passion. But apparently, there are organizations like Open Sats and Btrust, plus others like Bitpay and Xapo, backing them.
Funding Sources for Bitcoin Core Developers

Open source devs don’t really make money like businesses do. It’s all about contributions to keep them going.
From what I gather, miners get rewards while core devs kinda work for free. The article highlights that Bitcoin doesn’t have a company or a leader, and most of what devs earn comes from grants or community support. Honestly, it’s tiny compared to what miners pull in per block.
Yeah, the media totally ignores developers! They keep hyping mining every day, but these coders are behind a massive $1.8 trillion protocol. If they don’t get proper incentives, they might just leave for better-paying jobs. We need these devs to keep things running smoothly.
Exactly! Miners are always in the spotlight. The government even shuts down mining farms for energy use, so that gets talked about a lot. Plus, when Bitcoin’s price spikes, everyone’s buzzing about miners. But devs? They’re just hidden figures in the background.
FOSS is all about passion, I guess. Developers know what they’re getting into and they might not expect to be paid. But hey, being a core Bitcoin dev opens doors! Many blockchain companies want them on their teams, and they’re paying big bucks.

I don’t think there’s any data on this. Plus, devs probably won’t want to share that info due to privacy issues. Coding takes a lot of time, so I doubt they’re also mining. Running a node is more likely for them, lots of folks do that.
