hey everyone
I need some help from anyone in Germany. I heard you guys don’t pay taxes on crypto gains if you hold for over a year. The finance ministry confirmed it again recently. Can someone explain how this works?
not german but close enough to help a bit
yeah, there’s been a lot of confusion around how staking and lending are taxed. people weren’t sure if the 1-year rule applied to those too. as far as I know, profits from staking are taxed as income, just like mining. but if you hold a coin for over a year, you’re good on those gains.
I wanna jump in with some questions too
Thinking of moving to Germany since the tax rules are chill. If I’m a tax resident and cash out crypto I held for more than a year, do I still need to file taxes if I have no other income?
if you have no taxable income, no need to file a return
unless the tax office asks you to. and if you do have to file for other income, you don’t need to mention crypto gains held for over a year. from what I hear, there’s no spot for that on the form since it’s not taxable. also, health insurance costs are based on taxable income, so non-taxable gains don’t count.
