Comparing S19, Avalon 1246, and Whatsminer M30S/M31S

Hey all, just joined! Been lurking for a while. I have some scrypt miners and now looking to grab my first BTC miner. Really considering the S19 series, Avalon 1246, and Whatsminer M30S/M31S. Not sure if I wanna spend that extra cash on the S19s, was leaning towards the Avalons until I heard they might have reliability issues and can’t handle heat well. What do you guys think about the Whatsminers as an option? My electricity rate is around 0.076 usd/kw.

Nice to see you here! You asked a solid question. There are a few decent options out there like Avalon, Bitmain, Innosilicon, and Whatsminer. I’ve tried them all. Bitmain usually handles heat better than the others. Innosilicon is okay too, while Avalon kinda struggles, and Whatsminer is the least reliable in hot rooms. My experience is based on 200 miners total.

Good to know! I’m glad you rated Avalons ahead of Whatsminers. If the 1246s are reliable, they seem like a decent deal.

Not impressed with the Avalon 1246s so far. The hash rate is way lower than advertised; my 85THs only hit around 80 max, usually less. And one of my machines keeps rebooting every day and a half. They were brand new and have only been mining for a few months. Meanwhile, my S19 110s are crushing it, performing above expectations since day one.

I don’t own any miners myself but I run a 2MW hosting facility. We have about 600 rigs, including 360 S19s and around 100 Avalons (1246 and 1166 pro). The temps here range from 10 to 102F, and I’ve had the best luck with the S19 series. Most issues I see are with power supplies or bad soldering on hashboards. I started with Avalons and have moved up to 1246s.

I feel like the S19 Pro 110T is the best choice, mainly because it’s stable.
