The first altcoin ever created is actually Bitcoin Testnet, and it’s the only altcoin that has a direct connection to Satoshi. Seems pretty wild when you think about it.

The current testnet is testnet 4 which is a recent version. Before that, testnet 3 was made to replace testnet 2 when people started trading it for real value. And testnet 2 was created to replace testnet 1 when that happened too. Testnet 3 was intentionally flawed to discourage trading, but that just shows how people can be foolish sometimes. Testnet 1 was the only one existing while Satoshi was still around.

So you're saying testnet 4 has similar flaws? That seems kinda dumb to repeat mistakes and expect different results. You sound doubtful about whether Satoshi was really behind those posts telling people not to trade? Come on, it’s pretty clear Satoshi was involved with testnet 1. It set the stage for everything that followed.

So what? They needed a quick fix. If it leads to the same mess, who cares since it’s free for devs to switch things up? I think taking time for a better solution would’ve made more sense. But they prioritized quick fixes.

Yeah, but it got them to Citrea. That’s why Jameson Lopp took a jab at v3 too. He’s deep into Citrea. You see it too, right? I’ve been getting folks into Testnet since 2022, and suddenly Lopp’s post causes chaos? Interesting timing, right? lol

Wait a minute, you just acknowledged that Satoshi warned against trading testnet coins for value long ago. It’s not new. Just like resetting the chain isn’t really a groundbreaking idea.

No worries, I hear you. But I think it was a bad move to do this for years.

Listing something new every time it’s traded will just confuse good users. Look at the recent blocks total chaos. I got lost myself! Even the info on the wiki is messed up. Wild, right?

Funny you’d mention that. I actually told some early testnet miners about your services. It feels reminiscent of the early days of Bitcoin exchanges which were nicer than today’s clutter. Doublec’s namecoin exchange was my favorite.

Maybe we got off on the wrong foot. Most developers don’t care about what you believe testnet coins should be used for.

There’s a button at the top of the page for new replies. That's why I sometimes bend the forum rules. Just want to make sure people see my updates. Usually, mods merge those, and they’re paid, so not too guilty! Got a former staff member’s advice on it, funny guy, called you his ex-wife.

Yeah, when testnet 1 and 2 were traded, testnet 3 added a minimal difficulty rule to prevent trading. Testnet 3 and 4 let miners with ASICs get more coins, while CPU miners still did alright with lower effort.

I keep thinking about Bitcoin Testnet while watching Ross Ulbricht speak. Keeping things simple but new users still get confused. That’s why I walked away from FreeBitcoins.com. Tired of exchanges holding my funds and introducing new regulations.

This is really key for the future of Bitcoin Testnet.

Honestly, it’s not a big deal as long as testnet remains its own chain. If test coins could be mined from mainnet blocks, that’d matter more. Testnet has historically allowed more non-standard transactions, making it less censored.

Got a solid example from the Bitcoin mailing list today. Most people join this space to avoid centralized failures. Having a global test fail is unacceptable. Bitcoin is meant to solve that.
