Every day I scroll through posts praising AI. New models pop up, fresh data centers are built, and it’s all about the next ‘big thing’. At first, I was all in, but the deeper I dig, the less comfortable I feel.

What’s the real difference between AI and old cellphones? You get a gadget, they give you a few updates, and boom, after three years it’s sluggish. You end up needing a new one. It feels like they want us to keep upgrading rather than making things last.

Totally agree. My phone gets slow after a couple of years, and I’m stuck with outdated apps. But AI feels like a bigger issue than just our phones. When servers expire every few years, it’s more than just personal loss; it affects economies and job markets.

Yeah, it’s nuts. AI is still in the early days and new models drop every couple of months. Nvidia rolls out new chips like clockwork. But we should be asking if this is sustainable long-term. Can AI firms recoup their investments before needing new hardware?

If you’re worried about e-waste, look at miners. They go into debt for rigs that become useless fast. You sound clueless about the whole situation, tbh. This is just how tech works now.

Why is it like this though? Just competition? It feels like a money grab, not innovation. If phones are obsolete in three years, surely that’s by design, right? There are tons of old tech that still works fine.

You nailed it. There are billions of GPUs for AI, and they’ll just rot once they’re outdated. With mining, equipment often gets sold to gamers, but these AI chips don’t have that option. It’s a huge waste.

AI hype reminds me of the Dot Com bubble. Sure, some companies will survive after the crash, but the issue of planned obsolescence is a real problem in capitalism. Maybe governments need to step in to regulate.

You’re spot on. I love my old Xiaomi phone, but it’s hard to keep it going with outdated OS. Had to switch to a custom OS to breathe new life into it. It runs smoother and is more secure now.

Your worries are valid, but AI isn’t going anywhere. We’re still in the early stages and AI is being integrated into so many fields. Investors see it as solid and profitable, so they’re gonna keep pouring money in.

AI has its pros and cons, depending on how it’s used. Governments are investing in what’s trending, and that’s not gonna change anytime soon.

AI is becoming a necessity. Countries that ignore it will lag behind. It’s a mixed bag of good and bad; let’s hope for regulations that keep the balance.

I see your point, but we’re stuck. Companies control everything, and we’re forced to adapt. It’s like we have to keep buying new phones to keep up.

That’s the scary part. Corporations can be regulated, but individuals? Not so much. You can download harmful AI or tweak open-source stuff easily. It’s a wild card situation.

Yeah, you can choose to ignore AI tech, but that’s getting harder. Articles keep popping up about the potential AI bubble. It’s gonna blow eventually.

This cycle of fads isn’t new; it happens every few years. AI is like the internet’s next phase, but yeah, there’s definitely overhype. We’re just on a tech treadmill.

Tech evolution is natural. AI is just the latest phase. In history, we’ve seen jobs lost and new ones created. Adapt or be left behind.

Companies need to keep up or they’ll end up like Nokia. But do these AI servers really need that much hardware? I thought older tech could still be used, but everyone wants the latest for better performance.

Society doesn’t really see it that way. People want the latest models even when they don’t fully use the previous ones. Developers know how to keep us buying.

True. AI’s ramping up capital and energy use faster than other infrastructures. It mirrors the mobile phone trend where each new chip forces upgrades. But some AI investments might actually build lasting infrastructure.
