What Happens When My Transaction Gets Purged?

Been stuck with a pending transaction for days because of network congestion. I set my fee at 9 sat/vB but now it's close to the purging level at 8 sat/vB. How long until my transaction gets dropped? Will I get my fee back if it does?

You should see all your coins still there. Even if purging hits that 9 sat/vbyte mark, your transaction might still get confirmed, depending on whether some nodes still have it.

Each node has its own mempool, so if your transaction is valid, it can remain unconfirmed even if the fee is low. You could wait up to 2 weeks before most nodes drop it, unless you rebroadcast.

Thanks for the info! I tried to rebroadcast using blockchain.com and got an error. Just so you know, I used Trust Wallet to send the Bitcoin.

I'd suggest using Electrum or Bluewallet for rebroadcasting. Trust Wallet and Blockchain aren’t the best options out there.

Check out those links for broadcasting. Make sure you use the raw hex format for your transaction. If you go with Electrum, just import your wallet, find your TX, and you should be good.

That error is likely because you pasted just the transaction hash. You need the raw/hex format. If you can't get that from Trust Wallet, use Blockchair to retrieve it.

But why even rebroadcast if you don’t want the transaction confirmed anymore? Just curious. If your fee goes above 9 sat/vbyte, nodes will probably drop it after 14 days.

I thought rebroadcasting would help it get dropped faster, but now I'm not sure. I just want it gone when it hits that purging range or after 14 days. I keep getting errors trying to rebroadcast, so maybe I’ll just wait.
