Using Miners to Heat Spaces

Hey everyone, I’m involved in construction management and currently working from a trailer outside. In the past, I’ve used electric heaters to keep it warm during winter, but now I’m thinking of utilizing miners for heat instead. It's a win-win: I can heat my space, support bitcoin, and even make a little profit. Just to clarify, I own the business and everything, so no worries about stealing power.

Noise is a big factor for me. I’ve found the Antminer S3s to be pretty quiet compared to others. The fans aren’t super loud like those on the SP models. I’d probably grab a solid 1200w power supply and run a couple of S3s off it.

You might be surprised how little heat you actually need. If you run a 1.5KW heater, it might only be heating for about half of that time. So, it’s not as much power as you think. Just do the math based on your needs.

Thanks for the input! Last winter, I had two 1.5kw heaters running about 14 hours a day, so that’s around 21 kwh daily. Considering the S3's power draw, I’ll see if this whole miner thing is even worth it.

Definitely worth it if your electricity is 'free' since you’ll use the heat anyway. The miner’s cost should be less than what you’ll earn from mining. I thought about doing something similar at my place.

I’ve got some hashfast chips in a water-cooled setup. They pull air from the outside and push it inside. It’s not super quiet, but it’s manageable.

You might want to look for S1s. They’re cheap and you can undervolt them to keep noise down. I’m in NJ too.

Honestly, wood pellets might be a better bet for heating. They’re pretty cheap.

We need someone to design a case that looks like a heater for the S1s. They look pretty bad as is, and I wouldn’t want them just sitting out in my living space.

Not sure who this seller is, but I found a decent deal for two Antminer S1s with a PSU. They’ll use 700 watts but will be loud unless you tweak them.

You’re right about the dust situation. With miners, you’re just moving air around, so hopefully, you won't have too much dust to deal with.

Just to clarify, my trailer is outside, so I shouldn’t have dust issues. The air is filtered before it comes through.

I’ve set my S3s up vertically to improve airflow. This winter, I plan to put them on the floor to pull in cooler air and push the hot air up. Should be interesting.
