If you own over 50k euros in crypto, you gotta declare it to the Spanish government by the end of March 2024. This is under the new tax laws for virtual assets.

So, Spain finally recognizes crypto as valuable, huh? Guess they wanna get their cut... I can see other countries jumping on this bandwagon too.

Yeah, it's pretty expected. More countries will force crypto declaration soon. It’s a serious business now. If governments don’t control it, how will big players like Blackrock manage their ETFs?

On one hand, the individuals are affected, but EU legislation is pushing for strict KYC for service providers too. They even cap anonymous transactions at 1000 euros.
What’s the point of declaring if I'm just holding my coins? If I’m not selling, can they really tax me? Or do they just want to penalize us for owning them?
Not sure if that’s the best line of thinking. Laws can change anytime. Once you declare, you might be on the government’s radar.

Exactly, they know how to tighten their grip. First the service providers, then they’ll squeeze us for info. It’s all about control, and they know we can’t hide from them.
Bingo! They may not get data from foreign exchanges, so they’ll just target their own citizens. It’s a mess.
True that. Bitcoin's tough to ban, but controlling it is a different story. They wanna gather data and track all our moves.

We’ve been discussing this on my local board. Lots of talk about how mandatory KYC is coming for crypto. There’s a loophole though. If you keep your coins in a hardware wallet, maybe you can avoid declaring them.
I don’t think self-custody is off the hook. It's treated like regular wealth, not foreign holdings. If your total wealth is over the limit, you declare.
Yeah, wealth tax rules vary by region. Some areas have a 100% rebate, while others tax from 2 million euros onward. Most people won’t even need to worry.
But isn’t this just the start? Regulations will tighten over time. The amounts will keep dropping to pull more people into declaring.
Sad but true. The wheels of regulation are in motion. I mean, look at all these recent actions against major players in crypto.

Governments will get more aggressive. They’ll track bigger holders first and then go for average users later. It’s a slippery slope.
Honestly, if you reside in Spain, you have to declare, no matter where your assets are. Doesn’t matter if you’ve got your hardware wallet in Switzerland.
That’s a bit extreme. So even if my wallet is not in Spain, I still gotta report it? Feels like overreach.
