I'm just starting with Bitcoin dev stuff but really want to learn. Been thinking a lot about how we can keep the blockchain from getting bloated. Decentralization is key, right? We have to make sure running full nodes doesn’t end up being a pain with huge storage demands.

You could run into sybil attack issues if people really want to mess with the network. They can easily create enough nodes to control 70% of it. Mining, as a consensus mechanism, already does a lot here, but if we want to change rules, it gets tricky. Some ideas have floated around, like requiring proofs for every output and stuff, but that complicates things.
Yeah, even if we enforce that, people could still generate public keys without knowing the private ones. Check this example on the testnet. It shows how a tiny signature size could lead to some interesting vulnerabilities. Makes ya wonder about ECDSA's robustness.
Honestly, running a Bitcoin full node is cheaper than any of those top altcoins. I've thought about some crazy ideas for forks, like marking certain script types as invalid or limiting data sizes in OP_RETURN. But who knows if they'd even be accepted? Plus, spammers will always find a way.

If those schemes actually worked, we wouldn't even need mining in the first place. Mining exists because of vulnerabilities, as Ava pointed out. But really, if a government wanted to suppress donations or something, these proposals could easily backfire.
Appreciate you sharing those thoughts. Any solution will probably need to include anti-sybil features, which might just complicate everything. Mining’s consensus makes it tough for attackers, and it sounds like what’s being suggested could introduce more issues than they fix. And yeah, Bitcoin is pretty awesome! Took me a while to realize it's still the best option after looking at all the altcoins.
