Can You Mine with Bitcoin Core?

Hey everyone, quick question. I set up Bitcoin Core to run a full node, but I also want to mine a bit. Not looking to profit, just wanna help. I heard something about using the command setgenerate true (1) but it's not working for me. Any suggestions? And please, no suggestions about buying fancy hardware, I'm all about just supporting the network.

Running a full node does help a lot. You actually don't need to mine at all to be useful.

You can’t mine Bitcoin effectively with just CPUs or GPUs anymore. It’s all about those ASICs now, which are designed for sha256. So really, no point in comparing them.

If you don’t wanna drop cash on an ASIC, just running a full node is solid. You’ll help validate transactions and blocks. Or you could grab a USB ASIC miner like the newpac. Costs around $25-$50 and doesn’t drain power like the Antminer.

If you’re wondering why ASICs are way faster, here’s the deal. CPUs and GPUs are general-purpose, so they waste a lot of time managing data and running the OS. ASICs skip that and just handle the important stuff directly. Way more efficient.
