This thread is about speculation.
I’ve been thinking, with the way Bitcoin’s price has been dropping, who do you think is really holding onto their stash? Retail investors or institutional ones? Let’s share thoughts and make it logical.

Honestly, it's pretty clear institutions are still holding some Bitcoin. But drop below a certain point and they'll dump it quick. Retail traders, though, they’re the staunch Bitcoin believers. A lot of OGs haven’t sold any BTC since the ATH. Now, many are just waiting for further dips to panic sell. Smart ones know better.

My two cents? Retail investors seem to be the ones panicking most right now. They get all jittery with short-term price drops and often sell to cut losses. Institutions have a longer view and are less likely to sell off in a panic.
I think it’s about how they manage their investments. Institutions don’t physically hold their Bitcoin; custodial services do that. So, they might lean towards a long-term holding strategy since selling would mean dealing with intermediaries, making it less appealing.
Holding is for everyone, right? Anyone can decide how to hold, and this bear market tests our patience. We can even accumulate more as the price drops. Individuals and corporates can both hold without freaking out about every dip.
I’ll just say this for myself: didn’t sell any BTC at a loss despite the downturn. Holding tight and grabbing some more whenever I can. I do a bit of trading for volatility, though.
Institutions can generally hold longer. They won’t sell off big amounts unless prices crash hard. Retail guys? We’re often the first to flee when FUD kicks in.
I reckon regulatory pressures make institutions plan for the long haul with Bitcoin investments. They know panic selling means failing to deliver returns to clients. Retailers, however, have no obligations and often focus on short-term gains.
For me, retail is holding more BTC overall. Institutions and governments have around 4m BTC, while the circulating supply nears 20m. So logically, if retail holds the majority, they might be better at holding during downturns.
Yeah, retail might be the ones selling most. But I get it; newcomers don’t know how to ride the waves yet. Institutions might only sell a part for some security, planning to buy back later when prices drop.
True. Investing in Bitcoin should either be for the long haul or as a diversification tactic. Most individual investors don’t have solid long-term plans, and a sudden drop could force them to sell, even at a loss.
