Hey everyone, Looking for some insights from those in the UK who deal with crypto taxes. I’ve got a few questions for the veterans and tax experts here: - Does anyone have copies of the old HMRC crypto tax guidance from 2014? - When did the UK start taxing crypto-to-crypto trades? - HMRC dropped its policy paper "Tax on cryptoassets" on December 19, 2018. Is that the original date? Would love some clarity.

I can help with that! You can find the 2014 guidance notes here https://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukgwa/20160121032200/https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/revenue-and-customs-brief-9-2014-bitcoin-and-other-cryptocurrencies/revenue-and-customs-brief-9-2014-bitcoin-and-other-cryptocurrencies Just a heads up, tax dates can get tricky. New rules might apply to past returns, so who knows what they could dig up.

Appreciate it! Before 2018, there wasn’t a need to keep detailed records of every single crypto transaction. Makes sense since prices were so low back then. Lots of us have lost records from failed projects, especially with exchanges shutting down. And KYC wasn’t really a thing.

Exactly, right? Most folks thought tax was only due when cashing out to GBP. But now it seems HMRC is more focused on the whole picture.

If HMRC comes knocking for proof on past returns, just give them what you can find. Any record of buys or losses helps. I mean, it feels like their guidelines were intentionally vague anyway. Not trying to give advice here, just sharing thoughts.

Thanks for that! I’m in a tricky spot at work and may lose my job soon. I have some crypto to fall back on. Quick questions though: - If I cash out my crypto in June/July after losing my job in May, will I be seen as unemployed or self-employed for tax purposes? - Also, if I pay Capital Gains Tax, do I still need to pay National Insurance since it’s not income tax?

Honestly, that’s a bit complicated. Lots of factors at play here. You should consider chatting with an accountant who knows about crypto taxes. Get a few quotes and see who’s on top of the latest rules. Don’t hesitate to ask if they offer free consultations.

Yeah, I get that. I’m just a long-term investor trying to get my act together. I’m in the process of doing a voluntary disclosure now. Still employed, but need to figure out my tax situation once I go full-time on my gains.

Tax on crypto sucks, doesn’t it? Nobody wants to fork over their hard-earned profits. And let’s be real, the UK is pretty strict about tax. Late payments can hit you hard, even lead to bankruptcy.

Totally agree, the penalties here are no joke. Who wants to risk losing everything because of tax issues?
