So here's a thought... if I send my Bitcoin to a cold wallet my friend owns, does that wipe out the CGT trail back to when I bought it? Like, if he sells it in a month, is it just for those four weeks? I really wonder how the tax guys know the ownership changed...
Transferring Bitcoin Ownership and Tax Implications

I think it's clear why authorities in the EU and UK want to know our noncustodial wallet addresses. They're just trying to keep tabs on all our coins. It's hard to track noncustodial wallets unless they're investigating you specifically.
Yeah but the tax guys can't really know for sure where your Bitcoin went. They can see transactions and maybe analyze the chain, but unless they're digging deep, it’s not straightforward. Gifts can be taxed too, depending on where you live.

It all comes down to your friend's ability to prove ownership. You’ll probably need a sales deed, and they’ll expect proof. They’re not gonna chase you for info. Instead, they’ll set things up so you have to disclose your assets. Weird system, right?
Nah, sending BTC doesn't erase your CGT history. Tax authorities have other ways to track it, like KYC records and bank flows. They’ll figure out who really benefited from those coins, and gifting doesn’t reset anything.
Exactly, gifting crypto usually counts as a disposal, so you’re still liable for CGT up to when you made the transfer. Your friend just takes on the new basis from then on. They’ll spot it instantly if you try to offload through an exchange.

If they can see your coins are linked to specific addresses, every transaction matters. CGT or not, they’ll check how you report your profits or losses. Just moving coins around won’t dodge the taxman. Friend or no friend.
I kind of feel your friend might have to report it to the tax folks. I mean, when they sell, they'll need proof of what they paid for it. If they can’t show it, guess who ends up paying taxes on the full amount? Sounds like trouble waiting to happen.
