Hey everyone!
I've got some struggling hashboards from my antminer 17 series just sitting around. I heard a trick about preheating them in the oven, then quickly putting them back in the miner. Surprisingly, some started hashing again for a whole week straight.
But when I rebooted the miner, it couldn’t detect the "bad" hashboards. After a quick preheat, they worked again. What’s up with that? Any thoughts?

Dude, an oven is way over the top. Just use a hairdryer, way easier and no need to take out the boards.
This usually happens because of bad solder joints. Heating makes the board expand and maybe helps them connect. But honestly, they probably won’t be consistent. It's probably just poor-quality chips needing warmth to function right.

Yeah, this happens with tons of electronics, not just miners. Sometimes when you reflow a BGA chip, it can fix bad solder joints but it’s not a long-term fix.
You should really locate the faulty components, start with the plugs and connectors. Don't just keep heating it.

Sounds kinda like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. Eventually, the boards are gonna fail again.
I've had some luck putting bad hashboards in the freezer (sealed bag, of course) before powering them on. Those 17 series are just bad news overall.
What NotFuzzyWarm said makes sense; the solder is mainly the culprit.

Thanks for the insight! So, I should try using a heat gun instead of the oven, right? But what’s the right temp for this? Can't go over 85 degrees according to my Braiins software.

Appreciate it! Now I get it better. So I should check those data cable connections, right? The ones with the 2x19 pins coming from the control board?

Totally get it. The 17 series is like a dumpster fire compared to the 19 series. After a year of failures, I'm all about trying new tricks.
When I get broken 17 series miners, I do a couple of things:
1. Blow off the dust.
2. Clean with alcohol.
3. Ultrasonic clean with distilled water and that EM303 solution. Run it for 5 minutes.

Just to point out, a lot of what you said won’t really fix the main issues with the 17 series. Like I mentioned earlier, most of your points are probably a waste of time and cash.
Cleaning is good for used stuff but your other steps aren't really gonna solve anything. The best advice? Just steer clear of the 17 series altogether.

An oven's definitely overkill, same with a heat gun. I’m skeptical about that method too.
A heat gun may just overheat and ruin the boards. The bad solder connections are a problem that won't get fully fixed, even if you melt the solder again. You might just end up damaging other parts instead. Just saying...
But I've tried some crazy fixes and had a few work.
